GRAS were invited by Homes and Interiors Scotland to develop proposals for a house for the future as part of their annual exhibition. The GR45 HOM3 is designed in response to a range of global threats faced by humanity. It consists of a series of modular parts and can be extended or reduced periodically depending on the users requirements. A single internal space can be divided into three private bedrooms or converted into a series of comfortable living spaces simply by folding elements from the wall running the full length of one side of the unit. The home produces and stores its own energy while rainwater is collected and stored in tanks in its base. Waste water is cleansed using a reed bed filtration system, while small scale hydroponic crops located on the roof provide fresh fruit and vegetables. The home can be broken down into components allowing it to be easily transported to any location accessible by road or waterway. Due to land shortage, water tanks in the base of the unit can be drained to act as buoyancy tanks, meaning the unit can be sited on calm water as required.
