The principal ambitions of the proposal were to limit the number of ‘cells' within the floor plan by removing fixed thresholds and to ensure not only that no space was wasted but in fact that some spaces could carry multiple functions.
By removing fixed thresholds (doors and walls) where possible, natural lighting, ventilation and ease of movement between spaces was enhanced, while the sense of space was dramatically changed. Where previously some spaces received almost no light, now all spaces receive light from at least two directions and sight lines extend right through the apartment. The front windows are altered to link the living space into a previously unused front Garden while the rear terrace is altered to improve natural light while increasing the size of the main bedroom. Where previously the kitchen was located within an internal space it is now open to living spaces on three sides. Most significantly a section of wall at the centre of the plan between the kitchen and the guest bedroom is removed and replaced with a hinged section of wall, behind which is a concealed folding wall bed. The result is that when the wall is open, the living space extends right through the house from front to back, while closing the wall and dropping the folding bed forms the guest bedroom.
