PROPOSAL
The creation of a temporary space in which to display the bright, colourful
and fabulous jewelry of Irene Neuwirth using a collection of different wine glasses, glass
carafes and glass jugs, hung from a series of wire ceiling panels. Irene’s vibrant collection,
full of primary and bright colours, shall stand out proudly against a delicate background
palette of glassware, white ribbon, white walls and colourless nylon thread. The varying
range in shapes and sizes of the glassware shall become the medium on which to hang and
display the range. The organic nature of the curving sea of hanging glassware will create a
space full of reflections, facets and diffracted light - akin to the faceting of a precious stone.
An elegant bespoke chandelier shall house the focal point of the exhibition, the BOFFO
Supima.
MATERIALITY
Glassware (highly reflective, high quality plastic a possible alternative) of
a range of shapes and sizes - plain, colourless, patternless; steel wire; nylon fishing wire/
thread; ivory/cream/white ribbon and/or strung beads; rigid panels made from welded wire
and steel; ceiling hooks; screws.
BUILD-ABILITY
The existing condition shall remain as is and disturbed only by a number
of smallscrews in the ceiling, holes of which can be filled upon deconstruction. Lightweight
welded rigid wire panels are then suspended from ceiling hooks via steel wire, allowing the
existing light fixtures to remain undisturbed. Wine glasses and carafes are then hung from
these wire panels in a random pattern via steel wires and nylon thread, as described in the
plan and section.
ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE
The innovative use of everyday items in this transient
exhibit is intended to foster awareness of our environment, the importance of re-usability and
highlight a sustainable approach to high quality temporary design. Each element can easily
be re-sold or donated and ultimately made use of once this exhibit concludes. The use of
lightweight, small and easily handled materials also allows for ease of transport, construction
and de-construction.
