Open competition entry to design a new covered pedestrian bridge across the Forth and Clyde Canal within Clydebank Town Centre, organised by the RIAS on behalf of Clydebank Rebuilt. The inhabitable canopy concept extended the proposed function of canopy to form a new multi-functional community space overlooking the canal. Where previously the canal side was a dark, uninviting place not overlooked by any neighbouring buildings, the introduction of a new, highly visible community space attempts to address this issue directly to encourage better use of the outdoor space.
The perforated metal outer skin controls natural light entering the building by day while allowing artificial light to emanate from the building by night, illuminating the public spaces below.
