GRAS and Groves-Raines Architects were selected through an invited competition to produce a feasibility study for the repair, alteration and extension of the category B-listed ,Bearsden Cross Church in Glasgow. The extended church building was proposed to house the congregations of both the existing North and South Bearsden Cross churches. A range of options of varying cost and complexity were explored, and a preferred option consisting of a phased new-build extension containing a range of church and community facilities was developed. A new centre for the interpretation of the Antonine wall, which runs directly beneath the site was proposed with a new public café accessed directly form the main street. Facilities within the worship space were to see significant improvement, the church ground, were better arranged as a community garden and the manse was restored as the ministers dwelling.
