Major alterations and extensions to an existing cottage in Dunoon.

Following significant demolition works to clear the site of redundant structures and to strip the cottage back to its original form the building was extended in two directions to provide additional living accommodation.

The form of the extensions was driven directly by the form and scale of the existing cottage and tight planning constraints, relating to style, overshadowing and overlooking.

The majority of the glazing is located on southern facing elevations to maximise natural solar gain and views across the garden to the distant hills while limiting heat loss through north elevations.

The existing stone cottage structure was retained at the core of the building while new portal framed steel extensions were formed to either end, allowing for clear spaces, open to the roof above the principal living and sleeping areas without exposed structure. Kitchen, storage, utility room and sanitary accommodation is provided within the existing structure, while the new extensions contained living accommodation to one end and sleeping accommodation to the other, with a continuous, brightly lit passage linking all spaces overlooking a new garden terrace.
