A proposal for the conservation of Old Scatness Broch and integrated visitor centre, Shetland developed in collaboration with GRA Ltd. The design seeks to create a world-class heritage attraction to safeguard and protect the remains of the iron-age monument while showcasing it in the best possible manner. Often monuments of this nature are ‘made safe' to enable visitors to walk across them during summer months but will generally be closed out of season as there is limited protection from the weather. By its nature this approach often results in alteration and damage to the monuments and fails to adequately protect them for future generations. This proposal seeks to enclose the monument in its entirety, protecting it from exposure to the weather and providing a protective environment while allowing carefully controlled, year-round access. A large low-slung, single-span turf roof covers the entire site with minimal impact on the landscape and the monument. New visitor facilities including gallery, shop and café are located within a curved visitor centre which wraps around the enclosing structure.
