GRAS were invited by Studio KAP to produce design proposals on their behalf for an competition to redesign the central market street in Newcastle Under Lyme. GRAS proposed 18 zones derived by the nature of the markets and shops which occupy that section of the street. These zones were defined by changes in ground surface material and each zone was inhabited by a single modular storage unit which was expanded and used by the market sellers each day. The stalls allowed the sellers to store a range of goods and equipment, while providing an easily erected canopy, running rainwater collected from the canopy, recycling facilities, a public seat and tourist information. The scheme was awarded first place in the competition.
